Think about it..
How do I want my pictures to look?
Think about it....?
It’s important to think about your photoshoot before the time we arrive! So, here are some things to consider.
Do you want the results to be formal or informal, relaxed and casual, or businesslike, even archival?
How many people are involved, and do you want to have different groups? If so, how many and who is going to be in each group?
Who would you want to stand next to each other? I hate to ask the question, but does everyone get on together? You would be amazed at some of the stories ….. but perhaps some other time!
What to wear and what not to wear ……..
What are people going to wear? When you all arrive at the location is too late to decide that the groups are not colour co-ordinated, especially if the photoshoot is formal, or even worse, that two of the ladies are wearing the same outfits!
So what is it to be – smart or casual, or if it is appropriate and there is an opportunity to change, do you want some of the shots to be with you smartly dressed and some to be casually dressed.
You might think ‘Oh, well that just applies to the kids!’ …. Really?!
Your photos are going to reflect the real you, so think about it first and dress appropriately …….
For men …...
If you want the effect to be formal or business-like, you should consider wearing suits, or jackets and ties and clean shoes in keeping with what you want the results to be. You should avoid short sleeved shirts if you are not going to be wearing a jacket.
If you are going to be in a shot with others, then try to be colour co-ordinated. For example, a smart brown pin-stripe suit does not go well next to a bright blue satin dress! A bright yellow tie in a picture where all the other colours are subdued and muted will point upwards to the face below which it is being worn!
For ladies …..
Most important for you is to wear what makes you can feel relaxed. Darker shades have a slimming effect; the opposite is true with lighter shades. Dark stockings or tights have a slimming effect on the legs, the lighter they are, the more of the opposite effect they have.
Make-up as if you were going out for an important date (yes, with your husband if you have one!) and remember that if flash or bright lights are used, gloss finish will reflect the light which will be fine on the lips, but not so good on the forehead, nose or the cheek bones, so dab a spot of powder on before the photographs please!
All-over black or dark navy can be relieved by jewellery, a belt, a tasteful wrap. If your neckline is going to be high than consider the jewellery you would want to be seen in, as it will be emphasised!
Finally, what about your hair? Are you going to wear it up or down; up looks more formal, down and the opposite is true. Are you going to the hairdressers before the photoshoot, then will the result of the hair fix show as harsh or soft?
Just some things to consider ……….
Both sexes …..
We may see your shoes in full-length shots, so think about what you will be wearing on your feet, and men, what colour socks will you be wearing ……?
Generally, do not go for loudly patterned clothes, unless that is the effect you wish to give, and remember that these photos may be around for a while, and with the Internet then who knows where they will end up – how far and wide are your friends and family living these days?
Children …..
Finally, be careful what you say to your children. They are not naturally shy in front of a camera, unless you give them cause to be.
We can normally get good shots with most children, particularly if you don’t tell us in front of them what you think of them, unless, of course it is all good! Do not tell them to behave!
If they usually have a daytime sleep, then please get them up in time to be their natural enthusiastic selves about life, and if they are hungry, feed them before we arrive.
Think about what they will wear and about a change of clothes, particularly if there are going to be formal and informal photographs. Kids and formal clothes on (for example) a flying fox, do not always look good, but the informal shots of horrified parents’ faces will be looked at for ever! – You might even make some money out of them selling them to magazines?
General …..
So, that’s it, just think about what you are aiming for from our time together, communicate it to us, so that we have some plans to work from, and last of all, dress appropriately!
This is not intended to be an exhaustive list, but rather pointers to considerations that will help us produce a successful and pleasing portfolio of photographs for you. We are sure that you will think of other things that will affect you, but we hope you will consider all of these things as well.
